Finding a Hotel in New Haven

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for New Haven, CT, Connecticut.
New Haven is a midsize city located in south-central Connecticut at the junction of Interstate 91 and Interstate 95. It is the second largest city in the state and is located 81 mi (130 km) northeast of New York City. If the heart of New Haven is its downtown, then its lifeblood is Yale University with its central campus located here and for which the city is best known. The university's influence flows throughout the city with a rich history and vibrant arts and culture scene.

Many accommodations are also found in the downtown core and it is important to note that hotels fill up quickly corresponding to university-related events, including reunions, graduations and football games, so booking in advance is recommended.

DOWNTOWN

New Haven Green is the city's main square used as a venue for festivals, such as the New Haven Jazz Festival and International Festival of Arts and Ideas. Found in the center of downtown, it is divided by Temple Street and surrounded by Elm, Church, Chapel, and College streets. The Green is divided into two sections: upper (northwest) and lower (southeast) halves.

The downtown core is relatively compact, making it easy to explore the area by foot. Bordering on the Green on College Street, Yale's old campus is surrounded by restaurants, shops and attractions, including the Shubert Performing Arts Center, Yale University Art Gallery, Yale Repertory Theatre, and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.

Visitors can also enjoy viewing the historic sites and architecture in this area, including three 19th-century churches, the New Haven County Courthouse, and the New Haven Free Public Library. A good mix of chain and independent hotels in the area are found close to the Green or within proximity to Yale University. The Study at Yale is a popular choice, offering boutique accommodations and business amenities.

HOTELS IN SURROUNDING AREAS

There are also hotels and motels scattered around other districts of New Haven, including the areas of West Rock, located northwest of downtown and featuring the West Rock Ridge State Park; Southern Connecticut State University; Long Wharf, a waterfront district located south of downtown; and Quinnipiac Meadows, situated in the northwest area of the city.

Nearby cities include West Haven, that offers hotel accommodations, including the popular chains. Other chain-based hotels in the New Haven County area can be found in East Haven, Branford, Hamden and Milford.

ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATIONS

For those seeking an alternative to hotels and motels, they may want to consider staying at a bed and breakfast or inn. Travelers can find such accommodations outside the downtown area in the Prospect Hill district, located directly north of downtown and containing a portion of the Yale campus; Westville, situated in the western part of the city; and Wooster Square, New Haven's “Little Italy” neighborhood located east of downtown.
